Program Overview
The Wellspring Pastoral Residency is shaped through three rhythms of formation: Experience, Exposure, and Education.
These are not separate tracks, they work together to form pastors who are grounded in Scripture, shaped in character, and equipped for lifelong ministry.
Residents grow through hands-on ministry across the life of the church, learning by serving in real environments where leadership, discipleship, and pastoral care are practiced in real time.
EXPERIENCE
Residents are formed in proximity to pastors and ministry leaders, observing how ministry is lived out through decisions, relationships, and faithful leadership.
EXPOSURE
Residents pursue theological education alongside weekly reading and development, building deep biblical conviction and clarity for ministry.
EDUCATION
Core Competencies
During your time in the Wellspring Pastoral Residency, formation happens in intentional seasons of growth we call Core Competencies.
These are key areas we believe are essential for a lifetime of fruitful ministry, skills and virtues that are often not fully developed in traditional seminary settings or everyday church experience. Each competency includes workshops, reading, guided experiences, discussion, and real ministry application designed to form both character and skill.
Every pastor should know how to start new things.
Residents explore vision, calling, leadership, and the practical foundations of launching and building ministry from the ground up.
CHURCH PLANTING
A thriving ministry and a failing family is still pastoral failure.
Residents learn how to build healthy rhythms for life and family, prioritizing discipleship at home alongside ministry calling.
FAMILY FIRST
This is one of the most essential areas of pastoral ministry.
Residents grow in casting vision, leading teams, empowering others, and developing leaders who multiply ministry impact.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
“It takes preaching to make a preacher.”
Residents are trained in gospel-centered communication, with opportunities to preach, receive feedback, and grow in clarity and conviction.
PREACHING
The gospel speaks to every culture, tribe, and people group.
Residents learn how to faithfully engage diverse contexts and reflect the unity of the gospel in a multicultural world.
MULTIETHNIC MINISTRY
Pastoral ministry is care for people.
Residents gain hands-on experience walking with people through weddings, funerals, hospital visits, counseling moments, and everyday pastoral care.
SHEPHERDING
Healthy leaders know who they are, and who they are not.
Residents are guided through tools that develop clarity, humility, emotional intelligence, and identity in Christ.
SELF-AWARENESS
Ministry flows from a healthy soul.
Residents develop spiritual disciplines and rhythms that sustain lifelong faithfulness in ministry.
SPIRITUAL FORMATION
God entrusts leaders with resources to manage wisely.
Residents grow in church operations, budgeting, administration, and leadership stewardship for ministry health.
STEWARDSHIP
Hands-On Ministry
We believe pastoral formation happens through active ministry, not classroom learning.
Residents are entrusted with meaningful opportunities across the life of the church, including:
leading small groups
participating in leadership meetings
preaching in various settings
serving in ministry departments
pastoral care and discipleship moments
consistent ministry “reps” in real environments
The goal is not just understanding ministry but faithfully practicing it.
Every week will look slightly different depending on ministry rotation, but there are consistent rhythms throughout the residency.
Weekly rhythms may include:
one-on-one meetings with pastoral leadership
daily reading and reflection
ministry rotation meetings
quiet time and spiritual formation
sermon preparation and text discussions
communication and leadership labs
Residents typically follow a Sunday–Thursday rhythm, allowing space for rest and two days off each week.
